Before holiday in issue 5 of Polish Aviation Review “Przegląd Lotniczy”, there appeared a three-page article about Jan Nagorski and the Arctic Back project. The author, Krzysztof Krawcewicz does not focus on the details of Nagorski’s life, which can be read in Wikipedia or in more detail here on Arcticback.eu. Instead, it accurately describes the story of the life of a forgotten hero, whose fates are intertwined with historical events. There is also information about the Arctic Back project. I visited Mark Jefferies on his Little Gransden Airfield yesterday. We talked about Arctic Back project and building the replica of Maurice Farman MF-11. Mark accepted the offer to join the project. Mark and I became partners. This is good information for the project as Mark is a very experienced pilot. Mark is a member of Global Stars Champion Acrobatic Team UK, he is an owner of Yak UK and co-owner of Vintage Engine Technology.
This is a polar teddy bear from an entertainment park in Egypt. The character was created by Digital Emotions with Live Avatar Technology. This technology allows a character on the screen interacting with an audience making the show incredible. Krzysztof Kieszkowski of Digital Emotions ensures that the Arctic Back bear will be equally or even more sympathetic and funny. Imagine the Arctic Back tour across Europe with presentations about the Arctic, polar expeditions, environmental protection, companies (sponsors) that follow ecology principles in his production. What’s more, the on screen bear can discuss with individuals, act as a presenter, etc.
Just before Easter, I have visited the Przegląd Lotniczy office (Polish aviation magazine). Thanks to the happy coincidence and courtesy of editor-in-chief Krzysztof Krawcewicz I managed to retrieve the family album of Jan Nagorski, my great grandfather. The visit resulted in further contacts, Arctic Back moving forward.
Armed with references from Andrzej Doroszewicz, builder of replica RWD-13, I went to Puck to MDL. My great grandfather was trying to get a job there in the 1920s. I arrived at the MDLot Museum which is currently closed due to organisational changes. However, an exception was made to me. I spent many hours dabbling in history around seaplanes and flying boats. So far, the barracks and 3 hangars have survived, although today they serve a different purpose. The fourth hangar called “Black” next to a seaplane ramp has not survived. Another building is standing there now.
Whenever I am in Gdansk I visit Witek Nowakowski. He is my friend and my former instructor from Gdansk Flight Club. Thanks to Witek I got contact with Andrzej Doroszewicz, builder of RWD-13 replica. The next day I went to Andrzej and Arctic Back got another support person! RWD-13 is now in the garage and it is not able to fly at that moment but I fitted on the cockpit.
On 8th June 2015 on the eve of the 29th anniversary of Jan Nagorski death, the solemn unveiling of the restored grave took place. This was an initiative of members Warsaw Senior Aviator Club. The club deal with a popularisation of aviation knowledge and also they care of the aviators’ graves. Seniors were supported by juniors from Aviation College no 9 in Warsaw.
In August 2014 an article about Nagorski flights was published as it was the 100th anniversary of his expedition. A little-known Polish aviator got there more than a decade before Bryd and Amundsen. This is how the article begins. Tony Reichhardt briefly but excellently describes both the expedition and the life of Nagorski. There are also some interesting facts and I admit that I learned something new. I did not know Kuznetsov knocked the floor in Farman or that my great-grandfather during the Second World War was manufacturing bombs for resistance! I’m constantly learning new things about him
On December 11, 2014, the ceremonial unveiling of the commemorative plaque took place at the airfield of Wloclawek Flight Club in Kruszyna. Somewhat later in the Wloclawek Scientific Society a conference was held on Jan Nagorski and polar aviation, including Russian, with whom Nagorski was associated. The lectures were delivered by Dr Wladyslaw Kubiak, priest Dr hab. Jozef Debinski, prof. Dr hab. Stanislaw Alexandrowicz, prof. Dr hab. Zbigniew Karpus and Dr Michal Glock.
